"The Way," 11 x 15 original watercolor, unframed.
There is something about a trail headed someplace that you can’t yet see that is completely irresistible. There is a trailhead just southwest of Kayenta that leads to ancient petroglyphs. On our morning hike we found shards of ancient pottery (don't worry -- we left them there), and many centuries-old pictures and symbols carved into the rocks. It was a very exciting place to explore.
Although this particular view held no ancient drawings or artifacts, it was the trail itself that caught my interest and emotion. I am forever in search of a good trail. (Or as they call it in England, "footpath.") Trails beckon to me to embark on a journey, make a discovery, go someplace new. Often, I'll spot a trail from the road and go back later just to see where it leads. The road less traveled.
I love that this trail is flooded with light, although flanked with darkness on either side. I love that it's a rocky, uphill climb, signifying that it's not an easy journey, and may stretch our hearts a little. I love that the trail is narrow, pointing upward, leading to an open and expansive vista, an enlarged perspective. I love that it's an empty trail, because the journey of discipleship is often a lonely one.
If you look closely, there are several natural cruciforms (the shape of the cross) hidden among the shadows and rocks.
The Master came to earth to show us how to live, and how to make our journey back to our heavenly Home. He was and is The Way.
There is something in every faith and journey that yearns for guidance, wants to be safely led. The Tao (Chinese religion) translates as "The Way." Jesus said “I am the way, the truth and the life”. His paths are sure. He leads us beside the still waters and restores my soul. Part of my Desert Metaphors series, posted during Holy Week.
