"His Palms," 11 x 15 original watercolor, unframed.
I love the rhythm of these leaves from a desert palm, and all the light/dark contrast. The technique is masking and pouring, a great method for capturing sharp edges and the illusion of light. For those who are not religious, each painting in my Desert Metaphors series is simply a beautiful glimpse of moments in the Utah desert. However, for believers there are layers of meaning beyond the desert views. In this particular piece there is a double meaning. Not only are these his palms because his followers waved them in honor as Jesus rode into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. Isaiah wrote, “I have graven thee in the palms of my hands,” an allusion to his ultimate sacrifice for each of us. "A promise," says Russell M Nelson, "that he will never forget us. Never."
