"And With His Stripes," 14 x 10 original watercolor, unframed.
The rugged desert landscape is a lesson in extremes: life and death, light and shadow, sweltering heat and bitter cold. This image is from an afternoon hike in Capitol Reef. The dramatic lights and darks on that dramatic angle looked to me like lash-marks in the land. Big, wide-open gashes. I love that the foreground is intense, and the background looks like it goes on forever and ever. Long lasting effects. Long reaching ramifications. I watched a video where Jesus was being whipped by a prison guard, and it was uncanny how much the resulting wounds resembled the crags in these ragged cliffs. The technique was a long process with multiple layers of masking and pouring, which is a great technique for emphasizing value contrast and crisp edges. “And With His Stripes,” Part of my Desert Metaphors series, posted during Holy Week. 14 x 10 original watercolor, unframed. Comes with backing and a protective sleeve. Save $125.
